Italian women used to put drops of the poison Belladonna in their eyes to make them bigger, while European women would put a concoction of lead oxide on their faces to appear "porcelain". Here in the States we called the Bell-Bottoms. My dad had a pair he called Elephant Earred because the flair was so big. Not sure if that's what they were really called or not, but they were huge.
